OUR HISTORY
W. M. Brady & Co. was founded in New York in 1987 as a gallery specializing in Old Master and 19th-century drawings. The gallery has held regular exhibitions of drawings and paintings from its inception and has long published a series of scholarly catalogues to accompany these exhibitions. It has also participated in art fairs such as the International Fine Art Fair at the Park Avenue Armory in New York, TEFAF in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and both Fine Arts Paris and the Salon du Dessin in Paris over the past thirty-five years.
While focused primarily on works of art on paper, the gallery has consistently dealt in French paintings of significance from the time of the Revolution through the early twentieth century; sculpture from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and oil sketches, particularly plein-air sketches and works preparatory for the great history and religious commissions from the Baroque period through the end of the Beaux-Arts tradition.
In addition to selling European and British works of art from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, the gallery has also regularly mounted a series of monographic exhibitions and catalogues devoted to such contemporary artists as the late Julian Barrow and the late David Esterly, Victor Koulbak, Tim Lovejoy, Katherine Manisco, Hector McDonnell, Marc de Montebello, Roger de Montebello, Charlotte Nairn, and Simon Parkes.
Mark Brady is the founder of the gallery and Laura Bennett is the gallery’s director. While W. M. Brady & Co. maintained a public gallery on the Upper East Side from 1987 until 2018, today we see our clients by appointment, and exhibit occasionally in New York and annually at the Salon du Dessin in Paris. Our international clientele includes private collectors, colleagues, and the major museums in the United States, Canada, Britain, and Europe.
Dealers, Agents,
and Art Advisors
In addition to selling works of art from our own stock, the gallery has long acted as advisors and agents for clients and institutions. We offer advice on aspects of collecting, including the purchase and sale of works of art and the presentation of these works in terms of conservation, framing, hanging, and lighting. We are happy to advise particularly on purchases at auction and to act as agents in these transactions. We also are also happy to weigh the merits of the sale of drawings and other works of art either privately through a dealer or publicly at auction. All works of art are not alike, and each work has characteristics which suit it to one way of selling versus another. We equally act as advisors regarding gifts and bequests to museums.
W. M. Brady & Co. has acted as agents for both private collectors and institutions in the sale and purchase of works of art since its founding. A small rotating selection of works of art sold by us on commission or purchased by us on behalf of a collector or museum is illustrated here.
